A personal representative has three months after appointment to prepare an inventory showing each item's estimated value as of the date of death, and the Motor Vehicle Division writes a bonded-title surety bond at twice the vehicle's value, two settings where a documented number changes the outcome. New Mexico is a community property state, so in a divorce the vehicles, collection, and business acquired during the marriage are valued before they are divided, to the date counsel specifies.
Most New Mexico reports are completed online from photographs and documents you upload; onsite inspection is available statewide for oilfield and ranch equipment, full-house estates, and art or collectible holdings where condition and attribution drive value. The Appraisal FoundationAuthorized by Congress as the source of appraisal standardsCommunity property is what gets divided, and how the court divides it is a question for your attorney. New Mexico law defines community property as property acquired by either or both spouses during the marriage that is not separate property, and presumes property the spouses took title to together is community property. What that rule cannot do is say what a vehicle, a collection, or a business is worth, which is why an appraisal prepared to the date counsel or the court specifies is usually the first step.
On or before the last day of February of the tax year for property reported to the Property Tax Division's State Assessed Property Bureau, with an extension of up to 30 days available on form CAB-EXT when the Director approves it. A postmark counts as the filing date. Our equipment appraisals give owners a documented market value to stand behind when reported cost and actual condition have diverged.
