  • The appraisal was done very well. Since he was a local artist here in Charleston, SC, they took the time to study and review Jim Booth’s art. His work has made him extremely famous, which can make an appraisal challenging, but they did a superb job and clearly explained how they arrived at the appraisal value. I highly recommend Appraise It Now and will use them again for all my artwork.

Frequently Asked Questions on New Hampshire Art Appraisers

What comparables underpin an artwork appraisal in New Hampshire?

Recent arm's-length sales of similar works in the relevant market. We build the analysis from auction records and documented private sales, adjust for differences against the subject work, and reconcile to a fair market value conclusion, disclosing the method and specific comparables as the IRS expects for tax-related assignments.

When must artwork appear on a New Hampshire probate inventory?

Within 90 days of the fiduciary's appointment. RSA 554:1 requires a full, itemized inventory of the decedent's property on Form NHJB-2125-Pe, with each asset valued as of the date of death. Court guidance points to qualified appraisals for high-value items such as art and antiques, so significant works deserve documented valuations rather than guesses.

Does size determine a painting's value?

Far less than owners assume. Quantitative pricing studies show artist identity can account for 30-40% of value variance while size contributes only about 2-5% per additional 100 square inches, and condition problems can cut value by 20-50%. Attribution, condition, and provenance drive our adjustments, not dimensions.

Which personal items stay off a New Hampshire estate inventory?

Wearing apparel, Bibles, family pictures, photographs, and trinkets of sentimental rather than intrinsic value are excluded from the household-contents attachment of Form NHJB-2125-P. Artwork and collectibles do not qualify for that carve-out: they must be itemized with date-of-death values, which is where a documented appraisal earns its keep.

Will New Hampshire tax the sale or inheritance of an art collection?

No state tax applies either way: New Hampshire has no general sales tax and no estate tax for deaths on or after January 1, 2005. Federal rules still reach significant collections, including estate tax above the federal exclusion and the collectibles capital gains rate of up to 28% on sales of art held longer than a year.
