Not automatically. Probate practice under RSA 554 lets the fiduciary state values to the best of their knowledge on Form NHJB-2125-Pe, and an independent appraiser is not required unless the court orders one. But court guidance identifies qualified appraisals as the acceptable source for jewelry, antiques, and other high-value items, so a significant silver collection warrants a documented date-of-death valuation.
Against the realized market for comparable pieces. Melt value from weight, purity, and spot price is only the floor; we research auction results for the same maker, period, and pattern to quantify premiums for rarity, completeness, and condition, and we deduct for damage, monograms, or heavy wear. Exceptional makers can carry value far beyond metal content.
They answer different questions. Insurance appraisals estimate replacement cost through specialty dealers and retail sources, which typically runs higher than the fair market value standard estates require, based on auction evidence. A report must state which value definition it develops; using an insurance figure for probate overstates the estate.
By the marks. Sterling carries hallmarks, maker’s marks, and purity stamps that a credible report photographs and records piece by piece, while plated ware lacks a sterling standard mark and carries only a thin silver layer over base metal. Pricing plate by weight as if it were solid silver is the most common and costly mistake we see owners make.
Because some components are not solid silver. Knife blades are typically stainless steel, and certain handles and pieces are weighted with non-silver filler, so total weight overstates actual silver content. A proper appraisal adjusts weights piece by piece before applying spot prices, then layers maker, pattern, and rarity premiums on the corrected base.
