NRS 144.010 requires the personal representative to file an inventory and appraisement listing each asset's estimated value within 120 days after letters issue, but the requirement can be waived by unanimous written consent of all interested persons. When a wardrobe includes designer, vintage, or collectible pieces, a documented valuation protects the estate whether or not the filing is waived.
It depends on the purpose. Fair market value is the standard for IRS donations, estates, and probate; replacement value serves insurance scheduling; and actual cash value applies depreciation after a loss. The three can differ sharply for the same garments, so our reports name the standard they develop and match it to the assignment.
No. Value rests on designer identity, condition, rarity, fabric and craftsmanship, provenance, and actual resale demand, so provenance-backed or collectible garments must be analyzed separately from everyday clothing. Blending the two, or leaning on asking prices instead of what comparable pieces actually sold for, distorts the total in either direction.
Up to $12,000 in combined value. NRS 21.090 exempts necessary household goods, furnishings, electronics, and wearing apparel from execution up to that aggregate cap, selected by the debtor. High-value designer wardrobes and couture collections can exceed the cap, which makes a documented valuation the starting point for knowing what is actually protected.
Clothing is among the exempt personal property prioritized when a court sets apart up to $150,000 of an estate for the surviving spouse or minor children under NRS 146.050 and 146.070. Property set apart this way bypasses full administration, so garment and household values often determine what passes outside the ordinary probate process.
