The personal representative files an inventory, form PC 577, generally within 91 days of appointment, listing and valuing all the estate's property, and a vessel belongs on it at fair market value. Michigan has no estate or inheritance tax, but the inventory value still matters for heirs' basis and fair division.

A watercraft for which the statutory fee has been paid under MCL 281.1033 is exempt from all property taxes, so most registered recreational boats never appear on Michigan’s personal property rolls.
