The Blue Book of Gun Values as the dominant published baseline, corroborated with completed sales from auction houses and closed dealer or online transactions for the same model and condition. Because the book can trail the live market, a value that rests on the book alone, without recent sold comparables, is weakly supported.
Because each purpose has its own standard: fair market value for estates and IRS work, replacement value for insurance (usually the highest), and liquidation value for rapid-sale scenarios (typically the lowest, after commissions). A report that never states which standard it applied invites disputes with insurers, courts, or the IRS.
No. Wyoming imposes no state estate or inheritance tax, so an inherited collection is only taxed federally, and only when the estate meets federal filing thresholds; estates that must file IRS Form 706 report firearms at fair market value as of the date of death, with item-level support rather than a lump-sum guess.
Up to three, worth no more than $3,000 combined, plus as many as 1,000 rounds of ammunition per gun, under Wyo. Stat. § 1-20-106. The statute even prescribes its own valuation procedure: the levying officer must summon three disinterested appraisers who are sworn to make a true appraisement. A collection can end up partly exempt and partly exposed, which makes per-gun values decisive.
They must be appraised quickly. Wyo. Stat. § 2-7-410 requires after-discovered property to be appraised and the appraisement filed within one month of discovery, so a gun safe found late in administration triggers a hard deadline rather than an open-ended correction. We prepare date-of-death values for late-found firearms so the supplemental filing stays consistent with the original inventory.
