About Equipment & Machinery Appraisals in Vermont

AppraiseItNow provides professional equipment and machinery appraisals across Vermont, serving clients who need valuations for donations, lending, mergers and acquisitions, and financial reporting. Vermont's economy includes food processing, machinery manufacturing, scale manufacturing, and a thriving craft brewing industry, all of which generate consistent demand for credentialed appraisals that satisfy lenders, regulators, and the IRS.

Whether your assets are located in Burlington, Rutland, Brattleboro, or a rural Vermont community, our appraisers are available both remotely and onsite to inspect and document your equipment. Our equipment and machinery appraisal services cover a full range of intended uses and value definitions. We offer Fair Market Value (FMV), Orderly Liquidation Value (OLV), Forced Liquidation Value (FLV), and Replacement Value appraisals for various intended uses.

What Types of Equipment & Machinery Do We Appraise in Vermont?

Our appraisers evaluate a broad range of industrial, commercial, and agricultural equipment found throughout Vermont, including:

  • Food processing and packaging machinery
  • Brewery and craft beverage production equipment
  • Manufacturing and fabrication machinery
  • Scale manufacturing and precision measurement equipment
  • Agricultural and farm equipment
  • Restaurant and commercial kitchen equipment
  • Medical and dental equipment
  • Construction and heavy equipment
  • Technology and IT assets
  • Woodworking and lumber processing machinery

Vermont's equipment landscape is particularly shaped by its agricultural heritage and growing craft food and beverage sector, meaning appraisers here regularly work with specialized fermentation vessels, bottling lines, and dairy processing equipment. Whether the assignment involves a single piece of machinery or an entire production facility, our appraisers apply the cost, market, and income approaches as appropriate to produce a well-supported, USPAP-compliant report.

Across 16 published Vermont appraisal reviews, every one from a client who paid AppraiseItNow for an appraisal, the three things they raise most often are that they would hire us again, how quickly we answer, and how much research is visible in the report.

  • I recommend AppraiseItNow Inc. highly. I needed an appraisal of fair market value for geologic laboratory equipment for charitable donations to three universities. The unique items and limited secondary market complicated the valuation. They provided a sound, verifiable estimate and the 8283 forms that I was able to use in my tax filings. I would use them again.

Lab Equipment Appraisal for Charitable Donation

  • AppraiseItNow did an outstanding job appraising my 1998 Bobcat Skid Steer and circa 2010 Yuchai Crawler Dozer. We could not locate a serial number on the dozer, and there were no online sales available, but they were still able to develop an accurate appraisal using known specifications for my dozer compared to other comparable make and model dozers. They diligently researched both equipment items and provided well-documented reports.

Machinery & Equipment Appraisal for Bankruptcy Filing

  • They did an appraisal of medical equipment for donation. They did it quickly, and I received a blank form 8283 signed by the appraiser. It was what I needed. The price was higher than I wanted to spend on an appraisal, but a lot lower than other appraisers. AppraiseItNow was very responsive and communicative, and the other appraisers were not. I would use them again.

Frequently Asked Questions on Vermont Equipment Appraisers

What separates fair market value from liquidation value for equipment?

Exposure time and sale conditions. Fair market value assumes a willing buyer and seller with adequate marketing time, orderly liquidation value assumes a compressed but organized sale, and forced liquidation value assumes an auction under duress. The same Vermont machinery can carry dramatically different numbers under each premise, so the report must name which one it concludes.

How do we account for depreciation when appraising machinery?

We evaluate physical deterioration, functional obsolescence, and economic obsolescence separately rather than applying a simple age-based schedule. A ten-year-old machine that was rebuilt last year, or one made obsolete by a new technology, will not sit where an age curve predicts, and the appraisal has to explain those adjustments.

How does Vermont tax business equipment?

In Vermont towns that tax business personal property, listers appraise it at fair market value as of April 1, or under depreciation-based formulas tied to federal tax depreciation and net book value where the town has adopted the options in 32 V.S.A. § 3618. An independent appraisal gives owners market evidence when a scheduled value looks wrong.

Is farm machinery exempt from Vermont sales tax?

Yes, when it is used predominantly, meaning at least 75% of total use time, in producing agricultural or horticultural commodities for sale under 32 V.S.A. § 9741(25). The exemption applies at purchase and does not change how a town taxes the same equipment as business personal property. Buyers typically document eligibility with an exemption certificate, and the use test, not the equipment type, controls.
