No, automotive tools like the standard KBB car guides do not apply to towable trailers and commonly produce misleading numbers. We work from trailer-specific references, including the Commercial Trailer Blue Book from Price Digests, NADA/J.D. Power commercial and RV guides, auction transaction data, and live dealer listings.
Precise year, make, model line, VIN, and configuration, because small specification differences can shift a trailer's value by thousands of dollars. Axle count, deck length, and specialized systems such as refrigeration all matter, and documented maintenance history on those systems is a major value driver we verify during the appraisal.
No formal appraisal report is required. Vermont's DMV sets the surety bond at 1.5 times the vehicle's value, which it determines from recognized value guides or the purchase price, and the bond stays in effect for three years. An independent appraisal becomes useful mainly when guides cannot reasonably capture a custom or heavily modified trailer.
Because business personal property taxation is decided town by town. Some Vermont municipalities have voted to exempt business personal property entirely, others apply the cost-based schedules in 32 V.S.A. § 3618, and certain city charters exempt property acquired after a set date, such as September 30, 1995.
