We start with fine silver melt value calculated from weight, purity, and the current spot price, then add or subtract premiums for maker, pattern, rarity, and condition. For rare or historically important pieces, the collectible premium can far exceed scrap value, which is why weighing a Georgian coffee pot like bullion badly understates it.
The two most common are pricing silver plate as if it were sterling and including non-silver components such as knife blades in weight calculations. Both distort melt-based conclusions significantly. Our appraisers verify hallmarks, maker's marks, and purity stamps piece by piece before any weight-based math enters the report.
Often yes, even though Utah Code 75-3-706 lets executors state good-faith estimates for routine household contents. Practitioners treat ordinary furnishings as executor-estimated, while individual high-value items and collections, which antique silver services frequently are, get a USPAP-compliant appraisal to support the inventory and any federal filings.
