  • Responsive, professional, first class deliverables -- especially considering that that the appraised assets are extremely complex financial assets with little by way of comps. The deliverable satisfied my accountants and advisers as being more than adequate to support the valuation needed to complete a conversion to a Roth IRA

Frequently Asked Questions on Oregon Business Valuations

What does a defensible Oregon business valuation include?

An explicit standard of value, premise of value, effective date, and description of the interest being valued, plus a reconciliation of the income, market, and asset-based approaches with sources disclosed. Professional standards require enough documentation that a reader could in principle retrace the analysis.

Are rules of thumb acceptable for valuing a company?

Only as reasonableness checks. NACVA's standards say rules of thumb should never stand alone because they ignore earnings quality, growth prospects, asset mix, and risk. A multiple from a trade article will not hold up with the IRS, a court, or a serious buyer.

Why do Oregon estates need business valuations more often than estates elsewhere?

Because Oregon's estate tax starts at a $1 million taxable estate with rates of about 10% to 16%, while most states have no estate tax at all. A closely held business interest often determines whether an Oregon estate crosses that threshold, so its fair market value needs credible support.

Is an Oregon company valued at filing or at trial in a divorce?

Typically near trial or settlement. Oregon courts divide property under equitable distribution and usually adopt a valuation date close to the end of the case, though judges may select another date when fairness requires. For a business whose earnings moved during the proceedings, which date applies can change the outcome, so we confirm it with counsel before starting.
