Initially, yes: under 58 O.S. § 281 the personal representative may satisfy the appraisement requirement with their own opinion of value in the inventory, due within two months of appointment. But any heir, devisee, or creditor with a filed claim can demand court-ordered appraisers, so a professional firearm appraisal up front often prevents that fight entirely.
Complete identification of each firearm, including make, model, caliber, serial number, barrel length, action type, and finish, plus the condition grading standard used and the specific market data cited. A one-line letter quoting a single price book without physical documentation is considered unreliable for insurance, legal, or tax purposes.
At the valuation step. Owners who rely on asking prices, rumors, or generic book values instead of completed sales end up over-insuring at inflated replacement figures or selling below fair market value, particularly when wear, refinish, or non-original parts went undocumented. Closed transactions and graded condition are what keep the number honest.
Usually Oklahoma's. Title 60 of the Oklahoma Statutes presumes that personal property follows the person of its owner unless the law where it sits says otherwise, so firearms stored at an out-of-state cabin or safe are generally treated as Oklahoma-situs assets for estate and valuation purposes. That presumption keeps a scattered collection under one legal roof.
They can no longer be destroyed. Effective November 1, 2025, House Bill 1185 requires sheriffs and state agencies holding seized or unclaimed weapons with historic military value to donate them to qualified veterans' organizations instead. Identifying and valuing that historic character is now part of how such firearms get dispositioned in the state.
