A suitable disinterested person appointed by the fiduciary and approved by the court, under Ohio Revised Code 2115.06, whenever personal property values are not readily ascertainable. The appraiser takes an oath to appraise truly, honestly, and impartially, and some Ohio probate courts specifically look for credentialed personal property appraisers or similarly qualified professionals for assets like fine art.
Three months from the fiduciary's appointment. The Inventory and Appraisal, Ohio probate Form 6.0 with its Schedule of Assets, must list estate assets at exact date-of-death values, and courts typically require the Appointment of Appraiser, Form 3.0, to be filed and approved before or together with it. Missing the deadline can draw a show-cause citation.
Frequently not. Local court rules set thresholds, for example, household goods and furniture under $6,000 in Butler County or tangible personal property under $5,000 under Brown County's rule, below which no formal appraisal is required unless the court orders one. Artwork of real consequence sits above those lines and warrants documented valuation.
