Machinery & Equipment Appraisal for Insurance Coverage

  • I recommend AppraiseItNow Inc. highly. I needed an appraisal of fair market value for geologic laboratory equipment for charitable donations to three universities. The unique items and limited secondary market complicated the valuation. They provided a sound, verifiable estimate and the 8283 forms that I was able to use in my tax filings. I would use them again.

Medical Equipment Appraisal for Charitable Donation

  • AppraiseItNow did an outstanding job appraising my 1998 Bobcat Skid Steer and circa 2010 Yuchai Crawler Dozer. We could not locate a serial number on the dozer, and there were no online sales available, but they were still able to develop an accurate appraisal using known specifications for my dozer compared to other comparable make and model dozers. They diligently researched both equipment items and provided well-documented reports.

Frequently Asked Questions on New York Equipment Appraisers

How are tractors and combines valued on New York farms?

Against real transaction data. IronGuides, built from actual retail transactions, serves as the blue book for farm equipment, and we supplement it with auction results, dealer data, and trade publications, adjusting for hours, condition, attachments, and precision-ag options. Serial numbers, meter readings, and maintenance records anchor the adjustments.

Does New York tax farm equipment as personal property?

No. New York does not have a personal property tax, so the annual assessor filings farm operations face in many other states do not apply. Equipment appraisals in New York are instead driven by estates, lending and collateral requirements, insurance, partnership changes, and casualty documentation.

Which IRS form relies on equipment values after storm damage?

Form 4684, Casualties and Thefts. The computation depends on the equipment's fair market value immediately before and after the event along with its adjusted basis, so a market-supported appraisal plus damage documentation is what substantiates the claim. An insurance declaration page alone does not establish deductible value.

What standard applies when farm equipment lands in a New York creditor estate?

An open-market standard. Debtor and Creditor Law Section 24 directs appraisers valuing property customarily sold in open markets to determine the range of market prices and their average over a reasonable period. For tractors and implements, that puts auction comparables, dealer retail and wholesale spreads, and time-adjusted sales evidence squarely at the center of the statutory analysis.

Do farmland and farm equipment share one valuation date in New York?

Not automatically. Real property is valued for tax purposes as of the preceding July 1, with taxable status generally set March 1, while equipment is valued as of whatever effective date the assignment requires, such as a date of death. Mixed farm estates therefore often carry different effective dates for the land and the machinery, and the report should state each explicitly.
