Replacement figures often run several times higher, so using an insurance schedule in an estate or tax filing overstates the value.
For modest donations, yes, with reasonable fair market values. Once the claimed deduction for an item or group of similar items exceeds $5,000, IRS rules require a qualified appraisal reported on Form 8283, Section B. High-end designer donations reach that threshold faster than most donors expect.
At clear market value as of the decedent's date of death, the standard N.J. Admin. Code 18:26-8.8 applies to all property subject to the transfer inheritance tax. For significant wardrobes, furs, or couture collections, a retrospective date-of-death appraisal supplies the supportable figure the return needs.
When a formal inventory is required, yes. New Jersey law directs the personal representative to have a just appraisal made by two discreet and impartial persons, an unusual rule compared to most states. We can coordinate valuations that satisfy that requirement for estates where the court orders an inventory.
