Data comes from broker databases, auction results, sold-boat records such as BoatWizard's SoldBoats, and marine price guides including J.D. Power's NADA Marine guide and the ABOS Marine Blue Book, reconciled rather than taken from any single source.
Documented history and condition. Notable prior ownership, race results, rarity, quality of restoration versus originality, and demonstrated seaworthiness can all add value, but a professional appraisal only credits these factors when records substantiate them. Undocumented claims about a boat's past carry no weight with buyers, insurers, or courts.
Near the divorce decree or trial. New Hampshire divides marital property under equitable distribution rather than community property, and family courts generally treat the valuation date as the time of the decree or evidentiary hearing, so the appraisal should reflect contemporaneous fair market value rather than what the boat was worth at separation.
Not automatically. RSA 554:1 requires a full, itemized inventory of the decedent’s property within 90 days of appointment, but no appraiser is required for the listed values; the judge may appoint one when the nature of the property or the size of the estate makes it advisable. For a distinctive or high-value vessel, a professional valuation settles the question before it is asked.
