About Total Loss Appraisals in Montana

AppraiseItNow provides total loss appraisal services for vehicles, watercraft, and equipment throughout Montana, where total loss determinations follow the Total Loss Formula under Montana Code Annotated § 61-3-211. Under this formula, a vehicle is declared a total loss when repair costs plus salvage value equal or exceed the actual cash value, making precise, independent appraisals especially important. Montana's Valued Policy Law further raises the stakes, as insurers are legally required to pay full policy limits once a total loss is declared, leaving no room for post-determination negotiation.

AppraiseItNow serves clients across Montana through both remote and onsite appraisal options, accommodating everything from urban centers like Billings and Missoula to rural and remote communities statewide. Our appraisal services in Montana are designed to fit your timeline and location, whether you submit documentation online or require an appraiser on-site.

  • Joe at AppraiseItNow was extremely helpful with my total loss situation and requirements! I contacted him on Saturday of a holiday weekend (Labor Day 2025) and he responded back promptly! He then provided all the intake requirements to support my RV appraisal for insurance purposes which made the information sharing very simple (completed in 5-minutes). His team took the information and developed a comprehensive, industry standard report for me to provide back to my insurance company to ensure I receive the proper value for my RV. This was reviewed and completed within a few business days! Working with AppraiseItNow was a relief and a reasonable price. If I ever find myself in needing an apprasal again I will be a returning customer! I am definitely referring others in similar situation to me and confirming that AppraiseItNow can be trusted to deliver what they commit to! Thank you again for the support to Joe and the AppraiseItNow team!!!

Recreational Vehicle Appraisal for Total Loss

  • My daughter had purchased a very collectible 2003 Mustang Cobra terminator just 3 months before her accident with 50,000 miles on it, for 30,000 dollars. We were experiencing some very heavy rains and she hydroplaned and smashed into a guard rail and totaled her car. The insurance company offered her $18,000, but we told them that was an insult to this car. We kept going round and round with them but they were not budging. Finally we googled an independent appraiser and found AppraiseItNow! Their appraised value was 26,462. They negotiated with the insurance for us and we ended up with 25,900. They were awesome and helped us get much closer to the appropriate value of the Cobra. Absolutely worth the price we paid. Highly recommended!

    Car Appraisal for Insurance Claim

  • The appraisal was done very well. Since he was a local artist here in Charleston, SC, they took the time to study and review Jim Booth’s art. His work has made him extremely famous, which can make an appraisal challenging, but they did a superb job and clearly explained how they arrived at the appraisal value. I highly recommend Appraise It Now and will use them again for all my artwork.

    Artwork Appraisal for Insurance Coverage

  • AppraiseItNow did an outstanding job appraising my 1998 Bobcat Skid Steer and circa 2010 Yuchai Crawler Dozer. We could not locate a serial number on the dozer, and there were no online sales available, but they were still able to develop an accurate appraisal using known specifications for my dozer compared to other comparable make and model dozers. They diligently researched both equipment items and provided well-documented reports.

    Machinery & Equipment Appraisal

  • I was in dire need of an appraisal for my father's mobile home, which he needed for Medicaid approval. I couldn’t find anyone to do it for a long time, but then I found this company online and decided to give them a try. I’m so glad I did. They were wonderful to work with. I sent the pictures, and within just a few days I received the appraisal. They are absolutely worth the money.

    Mobile Home Appraisal

  • From the start they were very responsive, price competitive, and had a quick turn around time. Thank you so much to Joe who was very sweet in responding to my emails; I am looking forward to utilizing AppraiseItNow for many years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions on Montana Total Loss Appraisers

How does Montana decide when a vehicle is a total loss?

With a Total Loss Formula rather than a fixed percentage. Under Mont. Code Ann. 61-3-211, a vehicle is uneconomical to repair, and therefore a total loss, when repair cost plus salvage value equals or exceeds its pre-loss actual cash value. Claims that Montana uses a 70 or 75 percent threshold are incorrect.

Can a Montana insurer settle my total loss on book value alone?

No. Mont. Code Ann. 27-1-306 measures damages by the vehicle's actual replacement value in the local market and limits national pricing guides to a supporting role, while 33-23-202 voids policy provisions that cap payment at book value. An independent appraisal of local replacement cost is often what moves a low offer.

How are scheduled items like jewelry or art treated in a Montana total loss?

At their stated valuation. Mont. Code Ann. 33-24-103 requires insurers on policies that list specific items of personal property to pay the stated value in a total loss, with no deductions or offsets other than the deductible. The statute expressly excludes motor vehicle policies, which follow their own rules.

What recourse exists if a Montana total loss offer is too low?

Montana pairs its valuation statutes with enforcement teeth: 33-18-201 defines unfair claim settlement practices and 33-18-242 gives insureds a private right of action for certain violations. A documented appraisal of actual replacement value in your local market gives that challenge its factual foundation.
