Book value, face value, and retail asking prices ignore grade-specific market behavior, and a weak appraisal that leans on them without matching grade and variety can miss badly in either direction. Missouri probate requires the Inventory and Appraisement within 30 days after letters are granted unless the court extends time, listing fair market values as of the date of death. That short window makes early appraisal of collections one of the first practical steps in administration.
