Completed transactions from platforms like GunBroker, results from major auction houses such as Rock Island, and dealer sales archives, filtered to the same make, model, caliber, and condition grade. Appraisers pull sales, not listings, because closed prices reflect real buyer behavior while asking prices prove nothing.
Fair market value, the open-market price between a willing buyer and seller with no compulsion, which is the standard for IRS estate and donation work. Insurance replacement value runs higher and does not belong on an estate schedule, so a report that labels its value standard protects the executor from mixing the two.
Not for simply owning or inheriting it. Mississippi has no state estate or inheritance tax, and personal effects are exempt from personal property taxation, so gun appraisals there are driven by probate inventories, equitable distribution in divorce, insurance scheduling, and federal tax filings rather than any state levy.
It removes the gun from the lawful market entirely. Mississippi Code section 97-37-35 makes possessing, retaining, or transferring a stolen firearm a standalone felony, with a 15-year minimum sentence when two or more stolen guns are involved. That is why credible appraisal work verifies serial numbers and provenance instead of assuming every piece in a collection is marketable.
