  • I recommend AppraiseItNow Inc. highly. I needed an appraisal of fair market value for geologic laboratory equipment for charitable donations to three universities. The unique items and limited secondary market complicated the valuation. They provided a sound, verifiable estimate and the 8283 forms that I was able to use in my tax filings. I would use them again.

Lab Equipment Appraisal for Charitable Donation

  • AppraiseItNow did an outstanding job appraising my 1998 Bobcat Skid Steer and circa 2010 Yuchai Crawler Dozer. We could not locate a serial number on the dozer, and there were no online sales available, but they were still able to develop an accurate appraisal using known specifications for my dozer compared to other comparable make and model dozers. They diligently researched both equipment items and provided well-documented reports.

Machinery & Equipment Appraisal for Bankruptcy Filing

  • They did an appraisal of medical equipment for donation. They did it quickly, and I received a blank form 8283 signed by the appraiser. It was what I needed. The price was higher than I wanted to spend on an appraisal, but a lot lower than other appraisers. AppraiseItNow was very responsive and communicative, and the other appraisers were not. I would use them again.

Frequently Asked Questions on Connecticut Equipment Appraisers

What happens if a business skips Connecticut's personal property declaration?

A statutory penalty of 25 percent of the assessed value of the omitted or late property. Connecticut requires an annual declaration, Form M-15, listing taxable machinery, equipment, fixtures, and similar assets as of the October 1 assessment date, due to the local assessor by November 1.

How is machinery assessed for Connecticut property tax?

At 70 percent of its present true and actual value, meaning fair market value in a non-forced sale, developed through state-mandated cost-less-depreciation schedules. Inventory held for sale is exempt, but the machinery and equipment a business uses is assessed annually, so an independent appraisal is useful when the scheduled value overshoots reality.

What details does an equipment appraiser need about each machine?

Make, model, serial number, year, capacity, configuration, purchase date and cost, condition, maintenance history, and remaining economic life. Complete asset-level documentation is what lets the appraiser classify each item correctly and apply the right valuation approach instead of a blanket schedule.

What depreciation schedule applies to manufacturing machinery in Connecticut?

CGS section 12-63 sets a statutory schedule for machinery used in manufacturing: 90% of acquisition cost in the first year, stepping down each year to 20% in year eight and thereafter. Because the schedule never drops below 20% and ignores condition and obsolescence, scheduled values can overstate what aging machinery would actually bring, which is where an independent appraisal earns its keep.

Is manufacturing equipment ever exempt from Connecticut property tax?

Yes. Machinery and equipment installed in a manufacturing facility that meets the qualifying federal property classes can receive a time-limited exemption, and the exemption was expanded to cover used machinery and equipment acquired on or after July 1, 1992. The exemption is not automatic; it requires an annual filing with the claim.
