A desktop appraisal is a valuation performed remotely without a physical, onsite inspection of the equipment. Instead, the appraiser analyzes comprehensive documentation provided by the client, including photos, serial numbers, model details, specifications, usage history, and condition information, along with current market data and comparable sales.
Desktop appraisals are commonly used for equipment and machinery because many assets are standardized, mobile, and well-documented, making remote analysis both efficient and reliable. When properly scoped, a desktop appraisal can be fully USPAP-compliant and suitable for many intended uses, including tax, estate, insurance, and internal planning purposes. Desktop appraisals often reduce cost and turnaround time while still producing a defensible, professionally prepared report. However, if assets are highly specialized, poorly documented, or require physical verification, an onsite inspection may be recommended to ensure credible results.
